Nunhead Angel

28 Feb 2015, Posted by Tommy Clark in Nature, News, Posts

Here’s my first blog post in a while, from a visit to the fascinating Nunhead Cemetery a few weeks ago. Taking a break from blogging and social media probably isn’t a good idea in this era of self-promotion, but was a needed period of self-reflection to work on a new photographic venture. I’ve been plenty busy behind the scenes, taking and editing new images but without making it public, no-one would ever know! Let’s just say there’s a new portfolio…

Tall Ships Festival

10 Sep 2014, Posted by Tommy Clark in Cityscapes, HDR, Landscapes, Posts, Technical Insights

Greenwich is one of my favourite parts of London, so when I found out that the Tall Ships Festival was taking place there I knew it was an opportunity not to be missed. I’d never taken shots of fireworks before, and I hoped that the combination of the scenery of Greenwich, sailing ships and the River Thames would make for a good visual combination. I scouted the best vantage point using Google Maps, and settled on the Island Gardens…

Loncon 3 – Discovering New Worlds

22 Aug 2014, Posted by Tommy Clark in HDR, News, Posts

At the time of writing this I’ve just about recovered from the lack of sleep after attending as many talks and events as I could, during the five days of the world’s largest ever science fiction and fantasy convention, Loncon 3. Five long days of early starts to late finishes, with a schedule so packed that even with a time machine it would take years to get through the entire programme. As the immersion into science fiction and fantasy…

Happy Earth Day!

22 Apr 2014, Posted by Tommy Clark in Cloudscapes, HDR, Landscapes, Nature, Storyscapes, Technical Insights

This is one of my favourite shots from last year that I have uploaded for Earth Day, of the London Gliding Club (to the left) from Dunstable Downs, Bedfordshire. It was a very windy day and the multiple layers of clouds racing across the sky made for interesting textures. I had just set my tripod up and was still adjusting the camera settings when the sun burst through the clouds right in front of me. The rays of spotlights scanned…

Spring is Coming!

07 Mar 2014, Posted by Tommy Clark in HDR, Landscapes, Nature

An old shot recently re-edited, taken from my trip to New Zealand in 2009, at Lake Tekapo. Spring is now upon us in the Northern hemisphere and the sunshine is getting warmer. Despite there always being opportunities for landscape photographers the year round (and in any weather), there is a sense of coming out of hibernation that inspires us to start taking more trips out this time of year. I’m certainly looking forward to capturing the bright splashes of…

The Last Rose

14 Feb 2014, Posted by Tommy Clark in HDR, Nature, Storyscapes

The days grew shorter and colder, as summer began to fade from memory. The rain fell and the winds grew. One by one the roses died. The light pink roses were the first to go. They had only been planted earlier in the summer, and the new stems were thinner and weaker. The red roses had established their throne overlooking the garden for several years. Even they could not withstand the onslaught of winter. Nature had decided their time…

The cold wind blew across Poole Bay and into my face, making my ears ache as I took this shot. The clouds raced across the sky and the surface of the sea took on a rough texture of small peaks and ripples. It was the kind of wind normally associated as the advance warning of rain. In this case, a big storm was approaching from inland. Only minutes after I took this, the sun fell below the horizon and a…

Kissing The Earth

04 Jan 2014, Posted by Tommy Clark in Nature, Storyscapes, Technical Insights

The sun faded behind the horizon and the remaining light fell on the old girl in a soft glow. I stood and watched her carefully pick out the greenest of shoots in this forest clearing of marshland. A combination of the magic dusk light and the fact I was here alone with this pony, generated a powerful sense of serenity. Observing her I began to contemplate the significance of what I was witnessing. This beautiful wild animal roamed freely…

The Encounter

10 Dec 2013, Posted by Tommy Clark in Landscapes, Nature, Storyscapes, Treescapes

I arrived in the forest on a sunny afternoon, in search of vibrant treescapes at the height of Autumn colour. Shafts of light pierced through the trees in what seemed idyllic conditions. As I ventured through, on the look out for natural compositions, I spotted a New Forest pony looking straight back at me. The low sunlight glanced off her warm chestnut coat and caught my eye, providing a great photo opportunity that I prepared myself to take advantage…

Fire Tree

29 Nov 2013, Posted by Tommy Clark in Landscapes, Nature, Storyscapes, Treescapes

The burning glows of autumn light up the forest, sparking it into full bloom. As the greens of life and bright abundance of spring and summer make way to the rusty decay and bleakness of winter, the forest takes on the form of its mortal enemy, the unforgiving wrath of consuming flame. Maybe this is nature’s way of paying homage to the circle of life in artistic expression. Maybe it is just my interpretation. This is the season of…
